For tank number two I have decided too build a Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G. 10.5cm. It will be more challenging than my previous tank (T030) because of its small hull and lack of a turret.

August 2005: The hull was built out of 12mm (1/2”) plywood. The over all measurements are, 875mm long, 320mm wide & 140mm high. It will eventually be covered in epoxy to seal it against water, paint goo and whatever else.

After driving my Tiger around for a while it was decided that the StuG should have suspension, especially because it will be much faster. This photo shows the inner supports that keep the axels straight & the idler tensioner; it was made out of a piece of angle iron. I still need to box in the back section of the hull with ¼” ply.

This is the suspension as seen from the inside of the hull. It takes up less then 25mm across and 70mm of height. It’s going to make the inside of the hull a little bit smaller but I should be able to squeeze everything in.

The wheels are mounted on a trailing arm which is welded to the axles that pass into the hull. These axles have a bolt attached to them which is connected to a spring (top right). This makes for a simple suspension setup.

Close up of the temporary trailing arms. You can also see the bushings I made out of Acetal.

All the suspension arms have been mounted and the StuG can finally stand. The arms were painted primer red with a paint that prevents rust. Many thanks to my dad for welding them up for me.

This setup gives me 2” of travel on all wheels (bottoms out) and 2 ½” on individual wheels. Its also very soft, so small objects have no affect on the hull at all.

I’m using EV-X motors in this tank because they are cheap, and have sufficient power. I’ll be going with the 24v option, my Tigers fun to drive but I need more speed. It’s a really tight fit but I should be able to get two of these in the StuG’s hull, just.
